Innovation: VAL’EAS™ - Recycling of li-ion batteries (closed loop solution)

Even if expected to become the major source of energy for portable appliances it was up until now not possible to really & sustain ably recycle Li-ion batteries (accumulators) in an environmentally sound & eco-efficient way. Umicore developed and patented the VAL'EAS™ process dedicated to the recycling of Li-ion batteries: with no hazardous pre-processing, no waste (solid, liquid or gas) produced, high recovery rates and above all that, with a positive economical valorization of End-Of-Life batteries. All valuable metals are recovered and cobalt is re-used for its main part in production of new Li-ion batteries. An economical & sustainable Closed Loop Solution.

Innovation: Uhde EnviNOx™ - Technology for the combined removal of N2O and NOx from industrial waste gas streams.

The new Uhde EnviNOx™ process almost completely removes greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O), and smog and acid rain producer NOx.
From industrial waste gas streams, converting these compounds into nitrogen, oxygen and water vapour over a novel non-toxic catalyst. It is especially applicable to the treatment of offgases from nitric acid plants, currently the largest single industrial process source of N2O emissions. EnviNOx™ is the first industrially proven commercial low temperature process for the combined removal of N2O and NOx . At around € 1 per tonne of CO2 equivalent EnviNOx™ is quite probably the most cost efficient process available for the industrial scale abatement of greenhouse gases.

Innovation: DiaCell® System - an electrochemical technology for innovative water treatment solutions based on doped-diamond electrodes

DiaCell® System is an electrochemical technology for innovative water treatment solutions based on doped-diamond electrodes. The electrodes consist in a coating of a nano-polycrystalline boron-doped diamond (BDD) settled on silicon plates. Depending on their configuration, such devices allow direct electrolysis for different kinds of applications in the field of water treatment.
Typical applications:
- generation of persistent oxidants for water disinfection (drinking water, pool, process water, Legionella inactivation in cooling tower and hot water).
- Destruction of biological refractory organic pollutants for wastewater treatment (industrial effluents, organic matter oxidation, COD removal).
- Inorganic pollutant oxidation (cyanides, hypophosphites, chromium bath regeneration).
